شرح الحديث :

This Hadīth highlights that it is necessary for the praying person to place a Sutrah in front of him during the prayer. If he cannot find anything to place in front of him, he should put a stick in the ground in front of him, and if he cannot find a stick, he should draw a line on the ground as a Sutrah. Then, if anything passes in front of him after that it will not harm him. This is the case if the person is the Imām or praying alone, as for those being led in prayer, the Sutrah of the Imām serves as a Sutrah for them, because the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray facing a Sutrah, but his Companions who were being led in prayer did not. The congregation praying behind him all agreed that they prayed toward a Sutrah, so nothing that passed in front of them would affect the validity of their prayer. It is reported on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbās: "I came riding a jennet (female donkey), when the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the people in prayer. I passed in front of some of the people standing in row and none of them objected to it" [Al-Bukhāri and Muslim]. There is nothing to prevent acting upon this Hadīth, because there are no other authentic narrations to contradict it and because it is not very weak.
