Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he saw a man with a string in his hand to ward off fever. So he cut it off and recited the verse: ﴿And most of them believe not in Allah except while they associate others with Him.﴾
Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) visited a sick man and found a string in his hand. When he asked him why he had that string, he said that it was to ward off fever. Thereupon, Hudhayfah cut the string, considering it as a form of polytheism (associating partners with Allah), citing as evidence the Qur'anic verse: ﴿And most of them believe not in Allah except while they associate others with Him﴾ [Sūrat Yūsuf: 106]. This verse means that many people believe in Allah, yet they mix their belief in Him with polytheism.
