‘Imrān ibn al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) taught his father Husayn two statements to recite in his supplications: “O Allah, inspire me with guidance and protect me from the evil within myself.”

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) taught Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) this supplication, which demonstrates its importance. He commanded him to say: “O Allah, inspire me with guidance and protect me from the evil within myself." Guidance here means complete righteousness and sound reasoning. Whoever Allah, the Almighty, gives guidance, then He has led him to all what is good, and saved him from misdeeds and destructive sins. Allah, the Almighty, says in the Qur'an: {But Allah has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance and disobedience. Those are the guided} [Sūrat al-Hujurāt: 7]. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him to say in his supplication: "and protect me from the evil within myself”, because when Allah, the Almighty, grants a slave guidance, his self might prevent him from doing good. So, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to seek refuge with Allah from the evil of his own self so that he may find pleasure in the worship of Allah, and do good deeds with a reassured heart and a willing soul.
