كلمة (شهيد) في اللغة صفة على وزن فعيل، وهى بمعنى (فاعل) أي: شاهد،...
‘Ammār ibn Yāsir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sent me on an errand and I became ritually impure and could not find water, so I rolled around in the dirt like an animal and then came to the Prophet and told him about it. He said: "It would have been enough for you to do this with your hands like this." Then he struck the ground once with his hands and then used the left hand to wipe over the right, as well as the back side of his hands and face.
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sent ‘Ammār ibn Yāsir on an errand, and ‘Ammār became ritually impure and could not find any water. He did not know about the rules of ritual purification with earth for major ritual impurity. He only knew about its rules for minor ritual impurity. He used his best judgment and believed that just as one wipes earth over some parts of the body for minor purification, then it must be so that Tayammum (dry purification) for major impurity was by comprehending the whole body with dirt, in analogy to water. He rolled around in earth until the earth reached his whole body and then prayed. When he came the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) he was concerned about what he had done because it was based upon his own reasoning. so he told him to make sure whether or not he was correct. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said that instead of comprehending your entire body with earth, it would have been enough for you to strike the earth with your hands once and then use the left hand to wipe over the right as well as the back side of the palms of your hands and face, just like Tayammum for minor purification.
