Commenting on the verse: ﴿And if you are ill or on a journey﴾ [Sūrat al-Mā'idah: 6], Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If a man sustains a wound, which he suffered in the cause of Allah, or ulcers, then he becomes ritually impure and is afraid that if he bathes, he will die; he may perform dry ablution."
In this report, Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) comments on the verse No. 6 in Sūrat al-Mā'idah, which reads: ﴿And if you are ill or on a journey.﴾ He says that if a person sustains a wound or ulcer while fighting in the cause of Allah and then he becomes ritually impure, and he fears that if he takes a bath, he might die, he may perform dry ablution. This tradition is proof of the permissibility of performing dry ablution by a ritually impure person who fears he might die if he takes a bath. If he fears harm only, the verse still indicates the permissibility of dry ablution. The diseases cited by Ibn ‘Abbās here was given by way of example, and this rule applies to every disease in which the use of water causes harm, albeit not death, like the wound getting rotten or the period of illness becoming longer. It should be noted that this tradition is weak.
