Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) forbade praying at midday until the sun moves from its zenith, except on Friday.

شرح الحديث :

The meaning of this Hadīth is that it is forbidden to offer voluntary prayers shortly before Zawāl (the exact time when the sun is at its absolute zenith or meridian at mid-day), i.e. a few minutes before the Adhān of noon prayer (Zhuhr). Fridays are the exception to this ruling. This Hadīth is weak. The actions of the Companions are sufficient as proof for this ruling, as they used to offer voluntary prayers at midday on Friday without any objections. Also, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged Muslims to go early to the Friday prayer, and to engage in prayer until the Imām arrives to give the sermon. The Imām usually does not arrive until after the sun has moved from its zenith. Therefore, it is likely that part of their voluntary prayer would be performed during this forbidden time. Also, it is difficult to determine the exact time when the sun moves from its zenith, because the people at that time are inside the mosques, under their roofs, and do not know when Zawāl occurs. Asking the worshiper to go out of the mosque and step over the necks of the worshipers in order to investigate the time of Zawāl is a hardship, and hardship is not sanctioned under Shariah.
