What people customarily acknowledge and condone in a certain time and place.
"‘Urf" (custom) is a proof that reveals the ruling regarding an issue. It is an important proof with respect to the different times, places, and situations. In affairs related to transactions and dealings, it is equivalent to a stipulated condition. "‘Urf" is of two categories: 1. "‘Urf qawli" (word-related custom): when people commonly acknowledge that a word has a certain meaning. For example, when people in a society customarily use the word 'meat' to refer to lamb meat, so if someone says to another: "buy me a kilogram of meat", what is understood and intended here is lamb meat. 2. "‘Urf ‘amali" (action-related custom): it is when people commonly acknowledge the way a certain action is done. For example, when people acknowledge that the fee to use the public bath includes paying for the water and items necessary for bathing such as soap and the like. "‘Urf" is also divided into: 1. "‘Urf ‘aamm" (general custom), which includes the things that the majority of people are accustomed to. 2. "‘Urf khaass" (private custom), which only some people are accustomed to.
"‘Urf": a term that collectively refers to all the things that a given society knows and recognizes as good. Original meaning: what is "ma‘roof", i.e. known and recognized, of good and benevolent deeds. Other meanings: what is common and known among people.
