تزكية النفوس
Jubayr ibn Mut‘im (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah, people are suffering distress, the children are hungry, and the crops are withered, so ask Allah to grant us rain, for we seek Allah as an intercessor with you and seek you as an intercessor with Allah.” Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Glory be to Allah, glory be to Allah!” He kept proclaiming the glory of Allah till the effect of that was apparent on the faces of his Companions. He then said: “Woe to you, do you know who Allah is? Indeed, Allah is far greater than this. Allah should not be sought as an intercessor with anyone.”
عن جبير بن مطعم -رضي الله عنه- قال: "جاء أعرابي إلى النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فقال: يا رسول الله، نُهِكَتِ الأَنْفُسُ وجاع العيال وهَلَكَتِ الأموال، فاسْتَسْقِ لنا ربك، فإنا نَسْتَشْفِعُ بالله عليك، وبك على الله، فقال النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم-: سبحان الله! سبحان الله! فما زال يسبح حتى عُرِفَ ذلك في وجوه أصحابه، ثم قال: ويحك أتدري ما الله؟ إن شأن الله أعظم من ذلك، إنه لا يُسْتَشْفَعُ بالله على أحد".
شرح الحديث :
This noble Companion relates that a man from the desert came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) complaining about what had befallen the people due to lack of rain. He came to ask the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to implore his Lord to send down rain for them. However, he acted impolitely toward Allah, the Almighty, when he sought Him as an intercessor with the Prophet, a sign of his ignorance of the great status of Allah. In fact, intercession should be sought from the lower to the higher. Therefore, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) denounced his statement and declared that Allah is far exalted above such degradation. The Prophet did not criticize him, however, for asking him to supplicate Allah and intercede with Him on their behalf.
