Yazīd ibn Rukānah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he divorced his wife thrice. He went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) who asked him: ''What did you intend?'' He said: ''Only one divorce.'' The Messenger of Allah said: ''Do you swear by Allah on that?'' He replied: ''I swear by Allah.'' The Messenger of Allah said: ''It is as you intended.''

شرح الحديث :

‘Ali, the son of Yazīd ibn Rukānah, says that his father Abu Rukānah divorced his wife thrice, and was sad for that. Therefore, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) asked him about his intention, and he said that he meant only one count of divorce. To verify Rukānah's truthfulness, the Prophet asked him whether he would take an oath by Allah that that was his intention, and he said he would. Therefore, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is as you intended it to be, i.e. though you divorced three times verbally while you intended only one divorce, it would be counted according to your intention which is one count of divorce.
